Make Powerful Photographs in an Image-Saturated World

Create more than just a good picture. The CFA Photography interdisciplinary courses and minor can help you use photography as a form of personal expression and cultural communication. Learn fundamentals and develop your artistic approach as you learn to communicate meaning through image-making.

Our courses play to each instructor's innate strengths. Learn in the real world, in real time with photography professionals offering a rich variety of styles, media and techniques.

From Darkroom to Digital

CFA Photography exposes you to a wide range of image-making approaches: traditional film, non-silver processes, modern digital technologies, medium and large format photography, and a unique assortment of unconventional — and sometimes unusual — cameras. Find your own style as you explore a fusion of vintage and state-of-the-art photography.

Our core curriculum provides a solid foundation for anyone wanting to grow as an image-maker. Building on this, our faculty & staff regularly create new courses that break out of the traditional academic structure, pushing the boundaries of photography.

Classes for All Students

The CFA Photography minor and courses are available to students of all disciplines across CMU's campus. Classes are diverse, melding the viewpoints and backgrounds of students from all fields. We encourage you to find ways to fuse photography with your personal and academic interests.
